Who we are:
Leaders Of Tomorrow is a group of students in grades 6-8th at Jackie Robinson Academy in Long Beach, CA. We are passionate about being part of the solution to meet the mental health needs of our students but also our community at large. Recognizing that addressing mental health is deeper than learning about coping skills and sharing resources, we have decided to tackle the theme of mental health through the approach of helping students and our community members gain a deeper understanding of both everyday factors (life stressors) as well as systemic factors that are correlated with declining mental health. Our group’s mission will focus on civic engagement through social advocacy, volunteerism, and spreading education on policies that affect mental health in our community.
We hope to collaborate with local agencies that work with populations who historically most struggle with mental health needs (unhoused individuals, victims of domestic violence, LGBTQ, victims of bullying, substance use) in order to provide needed items (i.e. gathering donations or hosting drives) to meet immediate needs. Additionally, through our collaborations we also hope to gain more in depth insight on systemic policies/laws that directly impact these populations. With this new found information we would like to then be able to educate those around us (peers, our student/teacher population, our families, and community members) in order to bring more awareness to issues and policies related to the mental health needs of others
